Pelham Bay Soccer Club offers workout classes for boys and girls ages 5 to 18 years old. Our workout classes consists of Speed, Agility & Quickness (SAQ) activities. The aim of this supplementary program is to equip and elevate players physical strength, stamina and technique to the elite level.

WHAT IS SAQ?

Speed, Agility, and Quickness (SAQ) is a specialized form of athletic training that focuses on enhancing an individual’s ability to move efficiently and explosively in various directions and situations. Each component plays a unique role in athletic performance:

  • Speed refers to the ability to move in one direction as fast as possible. This includes sprinting or accelerating quickly over short and long distances. It’s a fundamental skill in almost every sport, where covering ground quickly can make a decisive difference.

  • Agility is the ability to change direction rapidly and accurately while maintaining control. It involves quick transitions between movements, such as cutting, pivoting, or weaving, and is essential in sports where players must react to opponents or a moving ball.

  • Quickness focuses on reaction time and the ability to respond instantly to stimuli—like a starting whistle, a defender’s movement, or a sudden change in play. Quickness isn’t just about moving fast, but reacting fast.

SAQ training combines drills and exercises that develop these three elements simultaneously. Athletes might perform ladder drills, cone drills, short sprints, or plyometric exercises to target coordination, balance, and explosive power. SAQ is widely used in sports like soccer, football, basketball, and tennis—anywhere speed, sharp directional changes, and rapid reactions are key to success.
